O'Connors Irish Bodhran Drum Beater Tipper Stick - Dartmoor Gorse Wood.
This O'Connors Gorse Bodhran Tipper is delightfully marked in a random fashion as gorse usually is. Much more interesting and beautiful in the flesh if you like something other than the standard looking tipper and it plays well too.
Finished with linseed oil and beeswax for a warm touch and protection.
Length 9.3/4"
Made from Dartmoor Gorse, also knwn as Furze or Whin bush.
This is a creamy coloured tipper with various pock marks that naturally occur in gorse, with an attractive dark brown area of bark with a small indent on one end. The notches and marks although looking rough are smooth so no need to worry about your bodhran skin.
A straight piece of Gorse is hard to find due to it's twisted growth pattern and gnarly structure, so we therefore prize a piece when found. It is then made into one of our O'Connors Tippers by an Irish Craftsman. We are always surprised and intrigued by the nature of the wood and unique variations in pattern.
Gorse is also associated with the Celtic God Lugh (the Celtic God of Sun and Summer) due to its bright, yellow flowers.
In Irish custom, a twig of Gorse was often hung in dwellings, or worn on clothing. It was thought that like the Gorse tree, wearing a twig would help you overcome any adversity.
A bride would wear a sprigg of gorse, she would have to cut it herself, however, as it was considered unlucky to give or receive as a gift.
Thorny bushes such as Gorse, hawthorn, blackthorn and blackberry, were considered to belong to the Sidhe or fairy folk and therefore be under their protection. These trees where thought to guard entrances to the Otherworld, and so were thought of as sacred or cursed, depending on one’s beliefs.

19/01/21 (Brush Style Dowel Tipper)
Just wanted to say this tipper has exceeded my expectations. It arrived this morning and to see each dowel shaped to fit perfectly together was a fantastic surprise. I had purchased something similar for much less and have been very disappointed. Oh it plays amazing too. Thank you. Clive

I'm a beginning bodhran player teaching myself via YouTube and have little knowledge of what a tipper is "supposed" to be. I do know that I prefer this one to the traditional style one (solid with bulbous ends) that came with my bodhran. This tipper seems to give me more control. I can play faster, more dynamically, and more quietly. It is built solidly. After a couple of weeks of playing with it most days nothing has broken off or come loose. This tipper is definitely a quality product.
